Book Review by Hope Venetta, Communications Committee

Unapologetic – a powerful word. It can read as abrasive, on the offense, and rude. However in the case of Dr. Rheeda Walker’s book, The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health: Navigate an Unequal System, Learn Tools for Emotional Wellness, and Get the Help You Deserve, the word unapologetic is an empowering foundation for African Americans who want to address their mental wellness, as well as for clinicians of all backgrounds who recognize the right of their Black clients to be whole.

In a very accessible way, Dr. Walker brings attention to the various aspects of American culture, steeped in racial bias, that affect Black mental health. She also discussed the internalized bias that some African Americans experience that further pushes them away from wholeness. Fortunately, she does not stop there. Dr. Walker outlines how Black Americans can reclaim their minds and their lives by exploring meaningful Blackness, maximizing spiritual resources, normalizing getting help and going to therapy, and addressing stress.

Personally, as a clinician and as an African American, I love how Dr. Walker contextualized the state of Black American mental health, painting a clear picture about why we see what we see in the therapy room with Black clients. I also appreciate the insights she offers on how to improve what she calls Psychological Fortitude, giving people actual tools to create positive change in their lives. This book should absolutely be a part of every therapist’s library.

Are You Ready for Medicare Hybrid Webinar

It's the celebration that we have been waiting for!

For over twenty years, counselors in every state have been advocating for inclusion across all systems.

And then came December 2022!

It was the cheer heard across state and party lines. Medicare was approved in a Bipartisan effort in both US Chambers and then signed into law by President Biden.

But how did it happen? What happens next? Are You READY for Medicare?

LCCNC celebrates this professional milestone with "Inclusion Fusion". In our current "Flash Drive" from now until March 1st, members who join and/or renew receive the 3.5 hour hybrid bundle for FREE! ($75 value).

"Are You Ready for Medicare" goes live March 17th from 1pm to 4:30pm. The first 1.5 hour will have power sessions lead by panelists Angele Moss, Jolie Long and Ashley Perkinson. The next 2 hour sections goes into the clinical side led by Suzanne Walker.

After the webinar, stay on for a Q and A with Ms. Walker. Enjoy a Regional Networking Member Appreciation with refreshments to follow!

This event is sponsored by SEAHEC who will be hosting the event for in person attendees at their facility in Wilmington, NC.

Register for "Are You Ready for Medicare" and let's celebrate the Inclusion- together!

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires that all Medicaid providers are recredentialed, a process also referred to as reverification. Since March 2020, CMS has allowed for the suspension of reverification due to the Public Health Emergency (PHE), brought on by COVID-19.

According to the Statement of Administrative Policy from the Executive Office of the President, published Jan 30, 2023, the Federal PHE is expected to end on May 11, 2023. With the end of the Federal PHE, reverification notices will resume to providers with approaching reverification due dates, as well as those whose reverification was suspended during the PHE.

Once the Federal PHE ends on May 11, 2023, reverification is not optional. Providers who receive a notice of reverification are encouraged to promptly respond. Providers who do not complete the process within the designated timeframe will receive a Notice of Suspension via postal mail and in their NCTracks Message Center Inbox.

For more information, please see Medicaid bulletin article Provider Reverification to be Reinstated at End of Federal Health Emergency.
