Clinically, Dr. Armstrong works primarily with children, adolescents, couples, and families on issues of depression, anxiety, ADHD, grief and loss, and relationship challenges. Additionally, she provides consultation to businesses and professional leaders seeking strategic approaches to wellness in the workplace. As much as she enjoys providing, managing, and supervising clinical services at the ACFH and consultation in the community, Dr. Armstrong also immensely enjoys speaking on a host of topics at local, regional, national, and international events. For 21 years, Dr. Armstrong served as the Minister of Congregational Care and Counseling at Union Baptist Church in Durham.
Dr. Armstrong double-majored in psychology and music at Yale University, earned her Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received a Master of Theological Studies degree from Duke University Divinity School (magna cum laude). During 2018-2019, Dr. Armstrong served as President of the North Carolina Psychological Association, making her the first African American female to lead the organization.
Ever a lover of gospel music, “Dr. T” Tonya Armstrong released in 2009 her debut gospel album, Choose Hope, which is available on amazon.com. She is also the author of the award-winning book/CD set, Blossoming Hope: The Black Christian Woman’s Guide to Mental Health and Wellness and Blossoming Hope Companion: Soothing Songs and Spoken Word Recordings, available on Amazon, Kindle, and in audiobook format at Google Play and Apple Music. Dr. Armstrong has been married for 30 years to her college sweetheart, with whom she enjoys raising their two teen-aged children. Whether laughing, singing, speaking, or teaching and encouraging her clients, Dr. Armstrong loves living life out loud!Melanie A. McIntyre, MS, LCMHC I am Melanie McIntyre. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate who specializes in the treatment of numerous mental health disorders across various populations. I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I fell in love with developmental psychology. I went on to complete my Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling at Capella University where I developed a stout interest in childhood trauma. While completing my education I worked as a preschool teacher where I helped commence an ancillary program that taught preschoolers Hooked on Reading, Phonics, Math, and Science. This program proved to be successful at our Chapel Hill location and was quickly introduced to our other schools across the district. This experience was very rewarding for me as it presented an opportunity for me to witness the natural stages of development firsthand while also demonstrating to parents the preschoolers’ natural abilities and desires to learn, grow, and thrive.
My passion is to help promote a more mentally stable community through educating the public, eradicating false presumptions and taboo ideologies surrounding therapy, and treating a variety of clients with a host of mental health concerns. Although we use a number of techniques to treat a host of issues, the theoretical orientation with which I most closely identify is Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I also identify with “Freudians” because I have found in most cases a client’s presenting problem has derived from events that the client has either forgotten, suppressed, or thought to be unrelated. My goal as a therapist is to change the faulty perceptions of therapy and treatment in my community while also working to develop a program designed to build relationships, establish positive coping skills, and educate youth in order to support a healthy, more mentally stable environment for adolescents and teenagers to thrive in within my community.
Clifton Garner, Sr., PsyD., is a native of North Carolina, originally from Roanoke Rapids. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from Park University, Parkville, MS. He has a master’s degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, both from Capella University, Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Garner has received specialized training in psychological diagnostic assessment (testing) and therapeutic interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Solution-Focused Therapy in the
private practice setting.
Dr. Garner graduated from Weldon High School in Weldon, North Carolina and immediately pursued a career in the United States Air Force that spanned 21 years. During his military career he has lived and worked in South Korea, North Carolina, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and Texas. Dr. Garner’s adventures instilled a love of travel and cultural diversity. Currently, he considers San Antonio, Texas, his second home after spending so many years there.
Among Dr. Garner’s other interests, he is an avid reader, movie-goer, self-proclaimed foodie and life-long student. He enjoys cooking and exploring new food types. However, his love for food
is equalized through calisthenics and weight training, which includes the occasional yoga class in as much as his varied schedule will allow. When he is not cooking or working out, he appreciates taking candid photographs in outdoor settings as a way to freeze time and capture the beautiful realities of life. Dr. Garner believes that it is important to build a life that you will love, and he consciously works to grow his own life with measured objectives while spending time with his family, friends, and being surrounding by the sounds of other people growing their happy lives as well.Dr. Garner’s professional interests include cultural and religious adaptations of clinical interventions in support of children, adolescent, and adult populations. He hopes to join his love of learning with teaching psychology to others that share his passion for the field.
