Event Description

This presentation will address power in the supervision relationship through the lens of intersectionality of identities. Through didactic instruction, activities, and discussion, participants will learn about power and how to address it in supervision. Presenter will review the rules for supervision from the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, along with the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. Presenter will discuss intersectionality of identities and how this enters the supervision relationship. Presenters will invite attendees to participate in activities that address power and privilege, linking the participants' response to supervision. Participants will discuss issues in supervision and how they address power in supervision.

Details

Angela Brooks-Livingston (she/they) is currently serving Wilkes County as a private practitioner. They are a graduate from Appalachian State University Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master's program with a concentration in Marriage and Family therapy, and certificates in Addictions Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapy. She holds credentials as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor, Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Certified Clinical Supervisor, and a National Certified Counselor. She worked in community mental health for 8.5 years in several positions including outpatient therapist, intensive in-home team lead, child services director, and associate center director. They started their private practice in August, 2020. Angela specializes in working with the LGBTGEQIA+ community, in particular transgender and gender expansive clients. They teach at Appalachian State University as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Counseling, Family Therapy, and Higher Education, along with serving as a Practitioner Instructor for Wake Forest University. Angela practices soul-care by camping with her partner, son, and dog, watching British television, practicing Julia Child recipes, reading, working puzzles, and listening to 80s hairbands.
