Program Description:
Sexual well-being is an important dimension of wellness, though many professional counselors lack foundational education and training in human sexuality. Though referrals to sex therapists exist, clients may prefer to work within established therapeutic relationships.  In addition, sex therapists remain a small niche and, to meet demand, more counselors are needed to address sexual concerns. This workshop will review common sexual worries, complaints, and dysfunctions, highlight basic approaches that general counselors can employ, review resources available to continue to build clinical expertise, and delineate when referrals to specialized sex therapists are appropriate.

The workshop is designed to help participants:
1. Identify two common sexual complaints that present in therapy and the eight primary DSM-V sexual dysfunctions.
2. Describe how moral incongruence appears within sexual complaints in therapy and how to work with this.
3. Describe the crucial role of clinician self-awareness and bias exploration in order to provide effective and ethical services to clients.
4. Identify 3 continuing education options for expanding clinical competency with sexually-related clinical concerns.

Presenter:
Dr. Cheyenne Carter is LCMHC-QS (NC), LPC-S (Texas) and AASECT-certified sex therapist based in Winston-Salem, NC. With over 20 years of clinical experience, she serves adults and couples as they explore barriers to relational and sexual health. Dr. Carter is a veteran educator and supervisor, serving on multiple university faculties over the years and routinely presenting at professional conferences. She is currently on faculty with Southern New Hampshire University. She provides in-person support for the Triad region, while also seeing NC and TX residents remotely.
