Program Description:

In January 2024, Licensed Counselors will be eligible to bill as providers for Medicare. While North Carolina has licensed the counseling profession since 1995, it is nearly 30 years later that clinical mental health counselors finally become eligible to bill for services to Medicare beneficiaries. With this amazing accomplishment, comes new populations that most LCMHCs do not have training in or experience with. Our license requires a professional responsibility to practice ethically and competently (C.2.) based on education, training, supervised experience, and appropriate professional experience. Whereas the Medicare population requires specific cultural counseling competency,  LCMHCs must now gain the requisite knowledge, awareness, and skills to work with the Medicare population set. This training is intended to introduce LCMHCs to an overview of the Medicare program, its population, and the inherent clinical service needs.

Learning Objectives:

The workshop is designed to help participants:

1. To develop a more in-depth understanding  of the Medicare insurance program and its beneficiary populations.

2. To differentiate specific factors and variables endemic to the Medicare population. Participants will identify the specific biopsychosocial needs of the Medicare recipient population.

3. To gain awareness of Medicare assessment protocols to ensure ethical and  competent clinical  services.

4. To advance understanding of Medicare fraud and abuse monitoring and highlight clinical documentation requirements.
